Bring Your Own Device: how the trend evolved
Increasingly workplaces are encouraging staff to ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) to the office, causing in a shift in how we think about workplace technology
Today’s digital world has changed the workplace beyond recognition. Working in an office used to involve sitting at a desk in front of a bulky desktop computer which would often inexplicably freeze or crash. For employees on the go, the standard issue tools of the day were heavy laptops, small-screen BlackBerrys and even pagers.
With the proliferation of new technology, the consumerisation of IT, the introduction of flexible working and with more ‘digital natives’ entering the workforce, everything has changed. More employees expect to be able to use their own fast and familiar, light and beautiful smartphones, tablets and laptops in their work. They also expect to work whenever and wherever they want.
Meeting employee wishes
Rather than simply ignore or block their employees’ wishes, as they might have done in the past, a growing number of organisations are making every effort to facilitate them, through Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programmes in conjunction with flexible working schemes. The benefits of these new strategic ways of working often significantly outweigh the challenges.
This White Paper from Sketch Studios explores the evolution of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), not just in the workplace but also in the education sector. It considers the wider context of the trend as well as the benefits and challenges for end users and organisations. It also considers the design implications – naturally – and what the future might hold for BYOD.
